Dog Walker Volunteer
Are You a Dog Person With Energy to Burn?
Are you willing to give some of your time to better the lot of impounded
dogs? Then
you are just what we are looking for. Dogs at the City pound need exercise
and loving attention. You will be providing them with the help they need
to reduce the stress of pound life and to become more adoptable until
they can find loving foster or life-long homes. You will be assessing
behavior problems such as fearlessness, barking, hyperactivity and lack
of training. Making note of such problems will provide the future adopter
with information concerning behavior issues they need to deal with.
Some dog owners or foster parents with physical limitations may need
volunteers to give their dogs the exercise they need. We would like to
be able to offer this service in the interest of healthy and happy dogs
and of their owners who really want to keep their dogs but feel they can't
meet their needs in this respect. If this interests you, you will be working
with owners or foster parents to reach a mutually agreeable exercise schedule.
Duties:
The work entails walking impounded dogs for 10-20 minutes each, assessing
the dog's highlights as well as any problems, and transferring relevant
information to PHA's dog coordinator.
Qualifications:
- Genuine concern for the welfare of the animals that is consistent
with the philosophy of the Petersburg Humane Association.
- Experience handling dogs.
- Physical ability and willingness to handle large dogs.
- Ability to work independently.
