Petersburg Humane Association

Goals and Objectives
January 2002

Ultimate Goal:
A community where every pet has a loving home and every animal is free of abuse and treated with respect.

Long-term Goal:
A community where every homeless pet has a safe and comfortable haven where it can live until it finds a loving home and where animal abuse or neglect is socially unacceptable and not tolerated.

Immediate Goal:
A community where everyone is aware that there is a humane society that will help with animals in need of care and/or homes, where the Petersburg Humane Association has the active support of a large group of concerned people, and where people successfully turn to the Petersburg Humane Association with their animal concerns and needs.

Objectives for 2000:
1.   An agreement with the City to care for impounded dogs, including making the pound more comfortable, exercising the dogs, and possibly adding an attached run.
2.   A cadre of people willing to care for impounded dogs.
3.   An organized system to enter, track and account for each animal entrusted to the Petersburg Humane Association.
4.   A system to easily track membership.
5.   Enough foster homes to place all animals without burning out fosterers.
6.   An education and awareness campaign concentrating on:
* The need to neuter all companion animals
* The need to restrain all animals in vehicles

7.  At least one managed feral cat colony (trapped, neutered, returned, fed, and sheltered)

Of these objectives, we accomplished numbers 1, 3, and 4. We also have a cadre of people willing to care for impounded dogs and are always delighted to hear from others who want to help. We have some foster homes, but need more. Too often dogs in our care are housed at the City shelter instead of in somebody's home and cats have sometimes had to remain in harm's way because we had no place to keep them. We now have a temporary cat shelter, but a home is still a better environment for cats. The objectives of our education campaign will continue until every companion animal is neutered and every animal is safely restrained, especially in moving vehicles.
